The cottages here are a few minutes from the sand. A Spar, a bakery, a chip shop and a couple of cafés are close too. A wet morning need not mean getting the car out.

The Anglesey Coastal Path runs through the village. Follow it south and it rounds Red Wharf Bay. This huge tidal bay empties back to firm sand at low tide. It fills again quickly, so check the tide table before you set off across it.

The beach faces north-east, so it takes the morning sun rather than the evening. Sit on the sand at breakfast time and the light is on your side.

Walks and lunch

You can walk a circuit of about seven miles across Red Wharf Bay at low tide. It finishes at the Ship Inn, so it works as a day out with a pub lunch in the middle.

On Red Wharf Bay you can eat at the Ship Inn, the Boathouse or the Tavern on the Bay.

You can stock up at the Tesco Extra in the village square or the Co-op on the main street. There is a pharmacy and a launderette in the village too.

From your cottage, Din Lligwy is about two and a half miles away. It is a ruined settlement of ancient houses and workshops in a wooded grove. You can walk round it for nothing.

You can also walk a circuit of 5.5 miles from Pentraeth village down to Red Wharf Bay. It returns through a conifer forest where red squirrels live.

The Ship Inn down on Red Wharf Bay is a row of cottages. They were put up in the eighteenth century or earlier. The pub began in the end one and spread into the rest over time. Behind a door still marked Pump Room there is a well. It is the obvious walk from your cottage for a lunch you have not had to cook.

The bay and its history

Most people round here did not own the roof over their heads. The land round the bay belonged to the Williams family at Tan-y-Graig. When their daughter Anne Jane came of age in 1864, the tenants marched up to the house behind a brass band. Afterwards they marched back again.
