More About Places to Stay in Benllech

The Anglesey Coastal Path runs right along the front. Walk north and it climbs to the cove at Traeth Bychan. It then goes on around the headland to Moelfre and its lifeboat station. The whole walk is about four miles and fairly easy.

From your B&B the car can stay where it is for most of your stay. There is a Spar, a couple of pubs and cafés along the front. The beach is at the end of the road.

Behind the sand you can find a promenade, a shop, a café and public toilets. The Dan Dare ice cream kiosk is at one end of the beach. At the other end, Benllech Isaf has a café with a balcony looking over the sand.

At low tide you can explore rock pools, and the beach is backed by a high grass-covered cliff.

Days out

Anglesey has no zip lines of its own. The nearest are at Zip World's Penrhyn Quarry, near Bethesda on the mainland. You can drive there over one of the two bridges across the Menai Strait.

Seawake runs boat trips from Beaumaris Pier in ten-person RIBs. They range from a fast ride down the Menai Strait to slower trips along the shore.

Down at Red Wharf Bay, just south of the village, the Ship Inn came under new owners in 2025. The Boathouse has cooked on the sand there for over fifty years. Walk it at low tide, when the sea has gone out for miles.

The history of the trade

The B&Bs here belong to a guest-house trade on this coast that is older than the beach holidays. At Red Wharf Bay the Min-y-don hotel was run by Margaret Roberts, one of twenty-one children. She went into domestic service before coming back to take the place on. She built it up through the Victorian years to fifteen bedrooms, a bar and stables.

The freehold went to auction in 1881. It was described as frequented by visitors from England, Ireland and the Continent. She was still known as the Queen of Red Wharf when she died in 1905, at ninety-three. What she ran is not far off what a guest house does now. It offers a few rooms, a proper breakfast and somebody who knows the coast.

Are the B&Bs close to the beach?
Yes. Benllech is a small village, so the B&Bs here are within a walk of the beach and the shops. That is most of the reason people stay here rather than further out.
How many B&Bs are there in Benllech?
Very few, which is worth knowing in July and August. If they are booked there are self-catering cottages in the village. There are more guest houses along this coast at Moelfre, Amlwch and Beaumaris.
Is it a good base for a family?
It suits families well. The beach is the main event, and the coast path goes right through the middle of Benllech. There are no RNLI lifeguards on any Anglesey beach, so keep children in sight in the sea.
Can we bring the dog?
B&Bs here usually take dogs, so check the listing before you book. One thing to know for the summer: a marked stretch of the main beach is closed to dogs from May to September. Leads are required on the promenade.
Is breakfast included?
Breakfast is included at most places to stay here, and the listing tells you which. Ask what time it is served when you book. A small place cooks to a set hour rather than whenever you come down. Say if you want an early start.
What is there to do on a wet day?
Oriel Môn, the island’s gallery and museum at Llangefni, costs nothing to walk into and is shut on Mondays. Plas Newydd, the National Trust house on the Strait, fills an afternoon indoors. Check its opening times before you go. The Anglesey Sea Zoo at Brynsiencyn is mostly indoors, as is Pili Palas near Menai Bridge. Each takes between one and three hours.
Can you walk from Red Wharf Bay to Benllech?
Yes. The Anglesey Coastal Path links the two. At low tide you can also walk across the sands of Red Wharf Bay. The tide comes back quickly there, so check the tide table first.

B&Bs here go early, so if the dates matter it is worth booking soon. Benllech beach is a short walk down from the main road. Beaumaris, Amlwch and Menai Bridge are all a drive away. The village's self-catering cottages are the other option, or see everything else in the village.
