Walk down to the Strait, then climb the Marquess of Anglesey's Column. It has 115 steps and a wide view out over the Strait to the mountains. It opens on set days only, so check before you go.
From accommodation in Llanfairpwll you can give an afternoon to Plas Newydd, under two miles along the shore. This National Trust house has Rex Whistler's dining-room mural of the 1930s inside. Its parkland looks straight across at the mountains.
You can walk the coast path to Menai Bridge from accommodation in Llanfairpwll. It is three miles, passing underneath both crossings, Stephenson's Britannia Bridge of 1850 and Telford's suspension bridge of 1826. There is a bus back, so you need not walk it twice.
Everyone knows the name. Much of what people say about it is wrong. The story goes that a local tailor invented it in 1869 to make the trains stop. Nobody names him, and the full fifty-eight-letter string does not appear in print until 1899. The short form, Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, is genuinely old and was a routine postal address in 1823.
The village's other claim is a solid one. Britain's first Women's Institute was founded here on 16 September 1915. Madge Watt addressed it, a Canadian who had joined one in British Columbia six years earlier. The first meeting was held in the summerhouse of a private house called Y Graig. It was not in the Women's Institute hall by Telford's toll house.
The village keeps a Co-op, a chip shop, a couple of cafés and the Penrhos Arms. The Penrhos Arms reopened in September 2025 after a refurbishment. Accommodation in Llanfairpwll is limited, so it goes early.
