Anglesey has plenty for children beyond the beach. The Anglesey Sea Zoo sits on the Strait at Brynsiencyn, and Pili Palas, a butterfly and reptile park, is inland near Menai Bridge.

The north coast is wilder and quieter. Amlwch grew rich on the copper of Parys Mountain, whose orange and ochre spoil still looks like nowhere else in Wales.

Anglesey’s caravan trade is older than the boom usually credited with it. One park at Rhosneigr was established in 1944, with the war still going on, and is run today by the family that started it. Another over towards Holyhead began as a family farm, was taken over as an army camp during the war, and it was the camp that led to the caravan park; it has been in the same family since 1955.

Others followed round the coast. One opened at Red Wharf Bay in the fifties, one at Benllech in 1973, and another above Lligwy Bay in 1976 that is four generations in and reaches its fiftieth year under the same family in 2026.

They gathered where they did for a reason. The bulk of the island shelters its north-east-facing bays from the prevailing south-westerlies, and Natural Resources Wales records the wave energy in them as particularly low compared with the coasts on either side. Round on Holy Island, the west takes the full force of the Atlantic.

That makes for a mild, shallow, sandy coast on this side of the island, and the sea here is measured rather than simply praised. In the most recent, 2024 classifications Lligwy and Rhosneigr were rated Excellent for water quality, and Benllech and Trearddur Bay Good.

Towing here is a fairly recent convenience. There was only one road onto the island until the Britannia Bridge gained its road deck in 1980, and the A55 did not run the whole way to Holyhead until 2001. Both crossings take a car and a caravan; the older suspension bridge has a seven-and-a-half tonne limit, so anything heavier goes over the Britannia.

For the days the beach will not do, Foel Farm Park at Brynsiencyn opens daily from 14 February to 1 November each year, the Anglesey Sea Zoo sits a little further along the same shore, and there is a butterfly and reptile house at Menai Bridge. A good many places here run to a season, so it is worth checking before you set off.
