Gower is a peninsula of limestone cliffs and sandy bays that runs nineteen miles west from Swansea, Wales’s second city. It was named the first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Britain in 1956. Gower is limestone, which is why it looks the way it does. The south side is a run of bays cut into the cliff: Caswell, Oxwich, Port Eynon, and Rhossili at the far end. The north side is quieter, and you can see the Loughor estuary, Llanrhidian marsh and sheep out on the salt marsh.
Swansea sits at the top of the bay, and the city and the peninsula meet at Mumbles. Wales’s second city is at one end, and open cliff is twenty minutes from the middle of it. The M4 runs in along the top, so you can reach this coast quickly from Cardiff or the English border. That is why accommodation in Swansea and Gower works for a short break as well as a longer stay.
Between Port Eynon and Rhossili there is a cave in the cliff called Goat’s Hole. In 1823 an Oxford geology professor named William Buckland dug a skeleton out of it, stained deep red. He decided the bones were Roman and a woman’s, because ornaments had been buried alongside, and the name stuck: the Red Lady of Paviland.
The Red Lady was in fact a young man, about thirty-three thousand years old. Somebody laid him out beside a mammoth skull, covered him in red ochre and put ivory rods and periwinkle shells in with him. His bones are now in the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, and the coast path runs along the top of the cave.
Most visitors head for the south side. Oxwich shelves gently and you can park close to the sand. Three Cliffs Bay has no road to it at all, so you walk in from Southgate or Parkmill and take a picnic. Rhossili is three miles of sand under a bare green hill, with Worm’s Head at the far end. Swansea and Gower accommodation runs from city rooms to cottages beside beaches like these.
In Swansea the market opens Monday to Saturday and sells cockles off the estuary. The National Waterfront Museum on the marina is free, and the seafront path runs five miles out to Mumbles.
Llangennith, at the north end of Rhossili Bay, is the surf beach, so it is where people go to learn. The Wales Coast Path runs the whole way round Gower, so you can walk as little or as much as you like.
The Gower was the UK’s first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The beaches are the reason: three miles of sand at Rhossili, Three Cliffs Bay, and the coves around Port Eynon.
