Walk the cliffs east towards Llanbadrig in the morning, drop down to one of the two coves in the afternoon, and end the day at one of the pubs in the village. It is the quiet end of the island, and for a lot of people that is exactly the point.
The village wraps itself round a small stone harbour, some of it looking over the sea, some tucked back in the lanes behind.
Cemaes was nearly a railway town. A branch line to the village was authorised in 1866 and never built, and that is very likely why it never grew into a Victorian resort: the crowds went where the trains went, and Cemaes stayed a village of stone streets round a harbour.
For forty-four years the payroll here came from Wylfa. The power station started generating in 1971 and stopped at the end of 2015, and it is now being decommissioned — a job that will run for decades. In late 2025 the site was confirmed as the location for Britain’s first small modular reactors, with construction expected from the mid-2030s. Whatever you make of that, it is why this village is not simply a pretty harbour: people live and work here all year.
Two beaches sit either side of the harbour — Traeth Mawr, the big one, and Traeth Bach, the little one — with the harbour wall between them and the village directly behind.
The cliff path climbs out past Porth Llanlleiana to Dinas Gynfor, the most northerly ground in Wales you can walk to — only the little island of Middle Mouse, out in the sea beyond, lies further north. A small tower up there commemorates the coronation of Edward VII.
Cemaes Bay holiday cottages sit at the northern tip of the island, with the harbour below and the cliff path in both directions. Amlwch and Church Bay are the nearest neighbours along this coast.
