A Four-Star Village Hotel at Llechryd, near Cardigan

Llechryd is a quiet village on the Teifi a few miles upstream of Cardigan, and Flambards is its hotel — a long white building set back off the road with its own car park, a garden at the back and the countryside starting immediately behind it. It is a family-run, unshowy sort of hotel that quietly holds an official four-star grade and a guest score of 9.3 out of 10, which is as high as anything in the Cardigan area. People book it for the welcome, the breakfast and the fact that a room here costs a good deal less than the same room by the sea.

The Rooms

Bedrooms are traditional, generously sized and comfortable, with private bathrooms, flat-screen televisions, tea and coffee making facilities and a work desk. The rooms are soundproofed, which is worth knowing if you are a light sleeper. There are family rooms as well as doubles and twins, and the bathrooms have a bath or a shower, free toiletries, a hairdryer, linen and towels. All the bedrooms are non-smoking. Daily housekeeping is included, and there is luggage storage if you arrive early or leave late.

The Restaurant, the Lounge and the Garden

The restaurant is family-friendly and serves traditional British cooking, with vegetarian and vegan dishes prepared to order. Breakfast is the thing guests rave about — you can have it continental, à la carte, vegetarian, or as a full English, and it is rated “exceptional” on Booking.com. There is a comfortable residents’ lounge with deep sofas, a stone chimney breast and a fire, and outside a garden with a sun terrace, outdoor seating and a picnic area. Parking is free and on site, and there are step-free facilities for guests with disabilities.

The Teifi Valley

Llechryd sits on the Teifi, and the river is the reason to be here. The old bridge in the village is one of the longest and handsomest in Wales, and just downstream is the Welsh Wildlife Centre at Cilgerran, with its reedbeds, hides and resident otters, kingfishers and water buffalo. Cilgerran Castle stands on a crag directly above the gorge a couple of miles away and is one of the most dramatically sited ruins in the country — Turner painted it. Coracles, the little round one-man boats, are still made and raced on this stretch of the river.

Cardigan, the Coast and Beyond

Cardigan — Aberteifi — is about six miles down the valley: a proper working market town with a restored castle where the first competitive Eisteddfod was held in 1176, a good high street and a farmers’ market. The Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire coasts are twenty minutes away in either direction, with Poppit Sands, Mwnt and the dolphin-watching at New Quay all within reach. Inland, Newcastle Emlyn and the National Wool Museum sit further up the Teifi. Staying at Llechryd puts you in the middle of all of it, without the coastal prices.
