This is the most interesting building to sleep in in Cardigan, and it is not close. The Albion occupies the old Bridge Warehouse on Teifi Wharf, right on the river beside the bridge, and the restoration has been done with real conviction — the whole interior lined in raw timber, the original stone walls left showing, low pendant lights over the bar, and the openings looking straight out at the water. The rooms upstairs are lined in the same warm wood and dressed with Welsh wool blankets. It feels like nowhere else in west Wales, and Cardigan Castle is a two-minute walk from the door.

The Rooms

The bedrooms are timber-lined from floor to eaves, with beams overhead and the woodwork left honest and unpainted, and each is finished with a Welsh wool blanket in a different pattern — the blue and red, the yellow, the green check. They are calm, dark and quiet rooms rather than bright modern ones, and the effect is closer to a good cabin than a hotel. Each has a private bathroom with a shower, free toiletries and a hairdryer, plus an electric kettle and a work desk. Some of the bathrooms are built into the room itself in the same timber, and the shower rooms are tiled dark with robes hanging ready.

The Bar and the Wharf

Downstairs is the bar — stone walls, a long banquette, stools at the counter and a proper drinks list — with a dining room alongside it under the pendant lights, and a big communal table. There is a terrace on the wharf. Breakfast is provided by the property, and staff speak both Welsh and English. Parking is free and on site, which in the middle of a town like Cardigan is not to be taken for granted. Canoeing on the Teifi can be arranged locally.

Cardigan — Aberteifi

Cardigan Castle is the town’s great restoration story: a ruin for decades, now reopened with gardens, exhibitions and a concert lawn, and the birthplace of the competitive Eisteddfod, first held here in 1176. The town below it is a working Welsh market town rather than a resort — a good high street, a farmers’ market, the Small World Theatre, and the Teifi running through the middle of it under the old bridge. Staying on the wharf puts you in the heart of that, on foot.

The Teifi and the Coast

Upstream, the Welsh Wildlife Centre at Cilgerran has reedbeds, hides, otters and water buffalo, with Cilgerran Castle standing on the crag above the gorge — the view Turner came to paint. Downstream the river opens into the estuary at St Dogmaels, where Poppit Sands marks the start of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, and bottlenose dolphins come into the river mouth in summer. North along the Ceredigion coast lie Mwnt, Aberporth and the dolphin-watching boats at New Quay. It is a rich stretch of country, and Cardigan is the natural base for it.
