A dog-friendly cottage with sea views, right by the beach near Holyhead
Pentowyn is a charming self-catering cottage in a superb coastal spot near Holyhead, on Holy Island, Anglesey — with a beach quite literally across the road and lovely sea views from the cottage. Sleeping four across three bedrooms and warmly dog-friendly, it suits families and couples who want the sea on the doorstep and their own space to relax. Guests rate it highly, at 4.8 out of 5 from more than 100 reviews on Sykes Cottages, and it is the kind of place people return to for the views, the comfort and the location.
The cottage
This is a comfortable three-bedroom cottage sleeping up to four, with a ground-floor king-size double that enjoys the sea views, plus single beds (one on the ground floor, one upstairs). There are two bathrooms, both on the ground floor, including a walk-in shower and a roll-top bath. The cottage is genuinely well equipped: a kitchen with electric oven and hob, dishwasher and washing machine, a cosy woodburning stove for cooler evenings, a Smart TV with Sky, and impressively fast WiFi (around 500 Mbps). Outside there is an enclosed lawned garden — handy with dogs or children — ample off-road parking, and even electric-vehicle charging (free overnight between midnight and 7am). Do note that the upstairs has charming low ceilings and beams and there is no upstairs toilet, in keeping with the cottage’s character.
The location
The position is the star of the show. The beach is directly across the road, and Penrhos Coastal Park — lovely for gentle waterside walks and wildlife — is within walking distance. The sandy bays of Trearddur Bay are about three miles away, Holyhead’s shops and amenities are close by, and the ferry terminal for Dublin is within walking distance, making the cottage handy if you are combining a holiday with a sailing to Ireland. Two well-behaved dogs are welcome, so the whole family can enjoy the coast path and the sands.
Holy Island and Anglesey
Holy Island, joined to the rest of Anglesey by causeway, is a dramatic corner of the Welsh coast. Beyond the beach on the doorstep, the spectacular South Stack lighthouse and its RSPB seabird cliffs, the heather-clad slopes of Holyhead Mountain, and the surf and sands at Rhosneigr are all within easy reach, and the mountains of Snowdonia (Eryri) are around 20 minutes’ drive away.
