Newborough, the forest and Llanddwyn
Newborough is best known for its enormous pine forest and the magical tidal island of Llanddwyn (Ynys Llanddwyn), linked to St Dwynwen, the Welsh patron saint of lovers, and crowned by a lighthouse and the ruins of a small chapel. The vast sands of Llanddwyn Beach are among the most beautiful on Anglesey, with views across to the Llŷn Peninsula and the Snowdonia mountains. Further afield, the Anglesey Sea Zoo at Brynsiencyn is about five miles away, and Caernarfon Castle is a short drive across the Menai Strait. A great base for the south coast
This corner of Anglesey is one of the island’s quieter and most scenic, and the house makes an ideal launch pad for it. Newborough Forest is laced with walking and cycling trails through the pines, opening out onto the dunes and the huge sweep of Llanddwyn Beach. At low tide you can walk out to Llanddwyn Island itself to see the lighthouse, the old pilots’ cottages and the ruined chapel, with the Llŷn Peninsula and the Snowdonia skyline filling the horizon. Families will find plenty to fill a week: the Anglesey Sea Zoo, boat trips on the Menai Strait, the beaches at Rhosneigr, and easy days out across the bridge to Caernarfon Castle and the mountains of Eryri (Snowdonia).
