A handsome Victorian stone house and a five-star welcome near Betws-y-Coed
Glyntwrog House is a 4-star bed and breakfast in a handsome detached stone house dating from 1885, set on Dinas Hill on the A5 just outside Betws-y-Coed. Run by Sean and Mary-Ann, it is one of the most highly rated places to stay in the whole area — an extraordinary 9.8 out of 10 from more than 500 reviews on Booking.com, with the WiFi alone scoring 9.9. It combines period character with genuinely warm hospitality, and makes a superb base for walking, sightseeing and adventure days in Snowdonia (Eryri).
The house and its rooms
There is real character here, from the Victorian stonework to the cosy log burner in the dining and sitting area. Rooms are comfortable and well kept, with a choice of Double, Small Double, Twin, King and Superior King layouts to suit couples and friends alike. Each has its own private bathroom with a walk-in shower, plus tea- and coffee-making facilities, and several enjoy lovely garden views. Outside there is a sun terrace to relax on after a day in the hills. It is a peaceful, grown-up sort of stay: children over 14 are welcome, the minimum check-in age is 18, and it is a non-smoking, pet-free house.
Breakfast and the practical bits
Breakfast is something to look forward to — cooked fresh each morning on a four-oven AGA, with a continental spread alongside a full English or Irish, plus vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and even breakfast-to-go options for early starts on the mountains. There is free private parking on site and that top-rated free WiFi throughout. Check-in runs from 4pm to 8pm (with a little advance notice appreciated) and check-out is between 8am and 10am. The Betws-y-Coed train station is around 0.8 miles away.
Betws-y-Coed and Snowdonia
Betws-y-Coed is the popular gateway village to Snowdonia, famous for Thomas Telford’s elegant cast-iron Waterloo Bridge over the River Conwy. From Glyntwrog House you are wonderfully placed for the national park: Zip World Fforest is just 1.4 miles away, the historic Gwydir Castle around 3.8 miles, the celebrated Bodnant Garden about 11 miles, and Snowdon itself roughly 12 miles. The famous Swallow Falls and the trails of the Gwydir Forest are close at hand too, and the village itself — with its shops, cafés, St Mary’s Church and the Conwy Valley Railway Museum — is the main hub for walkers heading into the surrounding hills.
