The Bold Arms stands on Church Street in the middle of Beaumaris, a cream-and-brick town-centre inn with an 1832 datestone above the door and flowerpots along the front. It is the sort of place the town actually uses — a genuine local with a well-kept bar, a pool table, a proper beer garden out the back and rooms upstairs — rather than a hotel that happens to have a bar. The bedrooms are spacious, which guests comment on more than anything else, and several are family rooms. Downstairs there is a good-looking timber bar with the taps and the bottle shelves behind it, and a run of rooms off it — one with a cast-iron fireplace and mirrors, one with red sofas, and a room given over to the pool table with a dartboard beside it. Out the back, a sheltered courtyard garden has benches, planters and a pizza oven, and it catches the sun. Breakfast is served, and the bar is open for a drink in the evening without going anywhere near the seafront prices.

Beaumaris on the Doorstep

Beaumaris is the handsomest town on Anglesey and it is all within a few minutes of the door. The castle — Edward I’s last and most technically perfect, never actually finished, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site — is at the end of the street. The Victorian pier runs out into the Menai Strait with the whole Snowdonia skyline laid out on the far shore, and the seafront green is a good place to watch it. The old Courthouse and the Gaol are both open to visitors and are a lot more interesting than they sound, and boat trips run out to Puffin Island from the pier in season.

Anglesey and the Mountains

The Anglesey Coast Path passes through the town, and the walk around Penmon Point to the lighthouse and the view of Puffin Island is a fine morning’s outing. Inland, the island opens up towards Llangefni and the beaches of the north and west coasts — Red Wharf Bay, Benllech and Moelfre are all a short drive up the coast. In the other direction, over the Menai Bridge, Bangor, the Ogwen Valley and the mountains of Eryri (Snowdonia) are half an hour away, and the Snowdon Mountain Railway is about 24 kilometres from the door.
