The Cottage

Renovated to a high standard in 2021, Tyr Ywen is stylish, light and thoughtfully arranged all on one level. The heart of the home is a superb open-plan living space: the lounge has a vaulted ceiling, floor-to-ceiling glazing with far-reaching views over the Sugarloaf, a log-burning stove, a Smart TV and patio doors (with electric blinds) opening straight onto the terrace and hot tub. The kitchen and dining area is smartly fitted with an electric oven and hob, an integrated fridge freezer, a dishwasher, a washer/dryer, a microwave and a Nespresso coffee machine, plus a dining table for four. Oil central heating, bed linen, towels, Wi-Fi and the fuel for the woodburner are all included.

The Bedrooms

There are two ground-floor bedrooms sleeping four. The master has a double bed with built-in wardrobes; the second is a twin, also with fitted storage. A smart family bathroom serves both, with a freestanding bath and a separate walk-in shower, and there is a further separate cloakroom. With everything on one level and a ramp to the front door, the cottage is well suited to guests with limited mobility.

Hot Tub and Setting

Step out from the lounge onto the enclosed sandstone terrace, where a private hot tub for four is the perfect spot to soak with a glass of something and watch the sun set over the hills. There is garden furniture for al fresco meals, a bike store, and a double car port with an electric vehicle charging point and private parking for two cars. The cottage sits on the owners’ livery amid 31 acres of countryside, and there is even a paddock available if you would like to bring your own horse (please arrange with the owner in advance).

Just three miles away, Abergavenny is a wonderful market town, originally the Roman fort of Gobannium and later a medieval walled town with its own Norman castle; today it is known for its independent coffee shops, bistros and the renowned Abergavenny Food Festival each September. The town is also a hub for walkers, with Offa’s Dyke Path, the Beacons Way and the Usk Valley Walk all passing through.

Walks and Days Out

This is superb walking and cycling country on the eastern edge of the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains. Beyond the Skirrid and Sugarloaf, you can explore the ridges above the Vale of Ewyas, visit the romantic ruins of Llanthony Priory, or follow the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal towpath. The Wye Valley, Hay-on-Wye and its famous bookshops, and the market towns of Crickhowell and Brecon are all within easy reach — and after a day out, the hot tub back at Tyr Ywen is the ideal way to unwind.
