HQ Pencadlys Prestatyn: a pub with rooms on Gronant Road
HQ Pencadlys is a family hotel and public house at 17 Gronant Road in Prestatyn, a seaside town on the North Wales coast. Booking.com says it is a two-minute walk from the High Street. The rooms
HQ Pencadlys Prestatyn lists a Standard Double, a Large Double and a Large Double En Suite, and the photos also show a family room with a bunk bed. All have a TV, and the rooms we saw are plain and clean, with small tiled shower rooms. The room doors carry Welsh dragon plaques with names such as Felin and Whanau.
Guests on Booking.com score the cleanliness 8.5 out of 10, the comfort 8.4 and the value 8.2, and the overall score is 8.0 from 517 reviews. Couples rate the location 9.0 for a two-person trip. Booking.com says renovation work was under way when it last updated the page, so ask what is finished when you ring.
Booking.com gives two different answers on children. The house rules say children over 12 are welcome, but the facilities list says adults only. Cots and extra beds are not available, so ring the hotel before booking with a child. Pets are not allowed, and the hotel does not take hen, stag or similar parties.
The bar and the garden
This is a working pub as well as a place to sleep. There is a well-stocked bar, karaoke, and a beer garden with plenty of seating. A CAMRA listing describes a single bar with sporting shirts on the walls, and the photos show the same. Good breakfast is included with the room rates we looked at.
The hotel sits in a residential area, so guests are asked to keep noise down. Free parking is on site, at the front and the back. Booking.com says the hotel is cash only when you pay, with a card taken as a guarantee.
What it costs

Prestatyn from the door
Booking.com lists the Cross Foxes about 200 yards away, with La Ricetta and D’Lish about 250 yards off. Prestatyn Central Beach is 1.2 miles away and Prestatyn station is 0.6 miles on foot, which makes this an easy stay without a car. The listing also points to Offa’s Dyke Path and says there are eight golf courses within 16 km, including Prestatyn Golf Links.
Rhuddlan Castle is 4.5 miles away, Bodelwyddan Castle 7 miles and Gwrych Castle 10 miles, according to the same listing. Rhyl beach is 3.6 miles along the coast.

HQ Pencadlys Prestatyn suits walkers, golfers and anyone who wants a cheap bed above a friendly pub in the middle of town. It is a simple place and a good fit if you plan to be out all day.
