Talybont-on-Usk sits where the Caerfanell stream meets the River Usk beneath the high ridges of the Central Beacons. This village grew around the canal, which once hauled lime and coal from the hills. You can still see the old lime kilns near the wharf. My top tip is to follow the Brinore Tramroad. This historic path climbs through the woods to show wide views of the Usk Valley. The dark water of the reservoir attracts red kites and ospreys. Local stone houses line the narrow lanes near the lift bridge. The poet Henry Vaughan lived nearby, and his words often reflected the calm of this place. Life here is defined by the slow pace of the boats and the scent of wild garlic.
