Ross-on-Wye stands on a high sandstone cliff above a loop of the River Wye. This historic market town is the birthplace of British tourism. In the seventeenth century, the red stone Market House was built at its heart. My top tip is to visit The Prospect. This public garden offers clear views over the famous horseshoe bend of the river. You can see the spire of St Mary’s Church from miles away. The narrow streets are filled with independent shops and old timber buildings. A walk along the river path reveals quiet meadows and steep wooded banks. Life here follows the flow of the water and the seasons of the Wye Valley. It is an authentic spot for a trip to the borderlands.
