Aberdyfi sits on the northern edge of the Dyfi Estuary, where the mountains of Southern Snowdonia meet the Irish Sea. This former shipbuilding port is famous for its long sandy beach and the legend of the sunken kingdom, Cantre'r Gwaelod. My top tip is to listen for the ghostly "Bells of Aberdyfi" while walking the dunes at low tide. You can watch the colourful sails of the local yacht club racing across the blue water for free. The narrow streets are lined with pastel-shaded cottages and independent galleries. The local jetty is a popular spot for crabbing as the tide turns. Scented sea pinks and gorse cling to the steep hillsides behind the village. Life here revolves around the shifting sandbanks and the evening sunset over the pier. It is a classic coastal destination with dogs welcome on the vast shoreline.
