About Swansea and The Gower Peninsula

With mile upon mile of stunning coastline, the Gower Peninsula is a fantastic holiday location, and with Swansea sitting at the gateway to this amazing area, visitors can enjoy the delights of both city and countryside. As Wales’ second city, Swansea is a vibrant and dynamic place to visit, with plenty of world-class attractions, and the Gower, the first part of the UK to be... designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is the perfect counterbalance to the buzz of the city. There are a number of fascinating museums in Swansea and around the Gower that are well worth a visit, including the National Waterfront Museum, the Gower Heritage Centre and Swansea Museum. More unusual museums include Swansea Bus Museum, 1940s Swansea Bay, and the Egypt Centre, located within Swansea University at Singleton Park. Another interesting attraction is Dylan Thomas’s Birthplace, at 5, Cwmdonkin Drive, in Uplands, Swansea. Here, you can tour the house where Thomas lived for more than 20 years, and see his bedroom, where he wrote much of his work. On the outskirts of Swansea, and forming the gateway to the Gower, Mumbles is a much-loved destination for residents and visitors alike. Stroll along the Mumbles pier, sampling an ice-cream perhaps, before exploring the high-end boutiques that Mumbles has become known for. Head up the hill to discover Oystermouth Castle, before setting off for the beach at Bracelet Bay or Limeslade Bay. Further, into the Gower, there are plenty of gorgeous beaches just waiting to be discovered. The peninsula may be small in size, but it has no less than 25 beaches and coves to explore, including Rhossili Bay, Whiteford Sands and Oxwich Bay. Caswell Bay is popular for surfing, whilst Three Cliffs Bay attracts climbers looking for a challenge. With so much coastline, it’s not surprising that there are all sorts of boat trips to be had in this part of the world. Cruise the River Tawe on the Copper Jack, Swansea’s community Boat, or go deep sea angling with a trip from Swansea Marina. High-octane trips in a RIB are also available, starting out from Oxwich, and nature lovers will enjoy a trip around Worm’s Head, to see seals, and hopefully dolphins. As you’d expect from a modern city like Swansea, there are plenty of great places to eat in the city, including the impressive Slice, in Sketty, and Patrick’s in Mumbles. For a more informal dinner, try Belle Vue Bistro, La Parmigiana or Munch of Mumbles. It's out of the way location has meant that the Gower Peninsula has long remained one of Wales’ best-kept secrets, and it is still one of the best places to rent a holiday cottage where you can relax and unwind. With Swansea on the doorstep, visitors can enjoy a holiday of two parts, combining the unspoiled beaches of the Gower with the bright lights and attractions of this vibrant city. It’s hard to imagine a more fascinating and exciting mix of rural and urban, which is why visitors hold this part of Wales so close to their hearts.
