Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways
The Ffestiniog Railway takes you on a 14-mile journey from the harbour in Porthmadog to the slate-quarrying town of Blaenau Ffestiniog. We are recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest railway company in the world, being founded in 1832. The world's oldest steam engines, Prince and Palmerston, are still in regular use and celebrated their 150th birthdays in 2013.
Our trains climb over 700 feet from sea level into the mountains through tranquil pastures and magnificent forests, past lakes and waterfalls, clinging to the side of the mountains.
This year, extensive clearance work has opened up stunning views, obscured for years by tree growth. Together with the addition of yet more modern carriages, there's never been a better time to experience the splendour of Snowdonia from our trains.
The Welsh Highland is Snowdonias newest and the UK's longest - heritage railway. Trains start their spectacular 26 mile scenic journey from beneath the historic castle walls at Caernarfon. The comfortable trains climb from sea level to the foothills of Snowdon, before zig-zagging dramatically down the steep hillside to reach the picturesque village of Beddgelert, nestling in the heart of the National Park, then through the magnificent Aberglaslyn Pass - voted the most beautiful spot in the UK by the National Trust - and on to Porthmadog, where we have just opened a new 1.3 million station offering a cross platform interchange between Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland trains.
Make your journey even more special by upgrading to First Class luxury for just 10 each way on the Welsh Highland and 6 on the Ffestiniog. Drinks and snacks are available on most trains and the WHR also offers freshly-cooked hot food.
Dont forget to visit Spooners, our award-winning pub and restaurant at Porthmadog, which now features an attractive beer garden where you can relax and watch the trains go by. Also check out our gift shops at Caernarfon, Porthmadog and Blaenau Ffestiniog. The caf at Tan y Bwlch also offers hot and cold food and is an ideal starting point for a number of delightful woodland walks.
Remember that one child under 16 travels free with each fare-paying adult.
