Located a mile south of the town, the river makes a passage through the Aberglaslyn Pass to create a rocky wooded defile that is flanked by sheer cliffs.
The grave is one of the town’s most historical features. Legend has it that Gelert was the faithful hound of the ancient prince Llywelyn. One day, the prince left to go hunting and upon his return met the dog smeared and stained with blood. As the dog ran joyfully to greet its master, he became alarmed when he saw his son missing from the cot and bloodstained bedclothes strewn on the floor. Thinking the dog had killed his son, the prince plunged his sword into it. As the dog lay dying, the Prince heard a child’s cry and found his boy unharmed. Nearby lay a big wolf which the dog had slain. The prince was filled with remorse and decided to bury his loyal companion at that spot.
