More About Llanberis

Its advantage over anywhere else is that you can start walking from the door rather than driving to a trailhead and hunting for a space. That is worth a great deal on a Saturday in August.

The village is geared to walkers and climbers rather than to sightseers. Drying rooms, early breakfasts and somewhere to leave muddy boots are easier to come by here than in most of the park. Llanberis mountain rescue is the busiest team in England and Wales, which tells you something about how many people set off from here.

On the 1st of July 1969 the Queen and her son sat on a circular slab of Welsh slate in Caernarfon Castle while he was made Prince of Wales. The slate had been cut and worked by the quarrymen of Dinorwig, on the terraces you can see from almost anywhere in Llanberis.

Seven weeks later, on the 22nd of August 1969, Dinorwig quarry closed. Nearly two hundred years of production stopped, and three hundred and fifty men lost their jobs in a place that had employed more than three thousand at its height. The last great commission the Dinorwig men worked on was the floor a prince stood on, and by the end of that summer the quarry was finished.

Nobody planned that as symbolism and it is better for it. The terraces are still there above the lake, cut into the mountainside in steps you can pick out from the road. They are the reason this village exists at all: Llanberis was built to house the men who worked them.

What has happened since is that the village turned to the mountain instead. Yr Wyddfa rises straight behind it. The Llanberis Path, the longest and least steep of the six routes to the summit, starts here, and so does the Snowdon Mountain Railway. Be warned that all six paths are graded hard, and the railway does not always run to the summit.

Two things to know before you plan around them. The National Slate Museum, which told the quarry’s story on the old workshop site, closed in November 2024 for a major redevelopment and has no announced reopening date. Electric Mountain, the power station visitor centre, is not merely closed but demolished — the site is grass. Both are still listed as open on a good many websites.

What is open costs nothing. The lake path along Llyn Padarn and the falls at Ceunant Mawr are free. So is Dolbadarn Castle, Llywelyn the Great’s round tower on the rock between the two lakes. Note that the path along the northern shore of Llyn Padarn is shut until early 2027, so check which side you are aiming for.
