Stay in the village itself and you get the rare Snowdonia week that does not need the car every morning. The forest tracks start at the end of the street, the shops and the pubs are a short walk, and there is a railway station in the middle of it. Unload on the Saturday and you can leave the car where it stands.

Take the whole day. Coed Tan Dinas is a boardwalk loop of about seven-tenths of a mile if there are small legs or wheels to think about, and Llyn Parc is four and a bit miles into the hills. Trefriw Woollen Mills, down the valley, is a working mill you can walk into.
Decide first whether you want the shops a minute away or nothing at all outside the window — the village and the hills out at Penmachno and Capel Garmon are genuinely different weeks. It makes more difference here than the price does.
Most of this village was built for visitors, and quite recently. When the railway came through in 1868 it took a good deal of the old place with it. The road to the church, an old farmhouse and the field the village called the Big Meadow were all swept away for the station and its approaches.
Five years later the parish gave up on its own church. St Michael’s, down by the river, was simply too small for the crowds arriving every season, so a new one was built up in the village in 1873. The man who built St Mary’s was Owen Gethin Jones, a local contractor who also built the railway station and the viaduct that carries his name.
The old bits are still standing round the edges. St Michael’s was never pulled down, and it holds a stone effigy of Gruffydd ap Dafydd Goch, who fought at Poitiers in 1356. Pont-y-Pair is older than it looks too: the fabric you cross is probably seventeenth-century, with some arches springing straight off the bedrock.
What that leaves is a Victorian resort village with a seventeenth-century bridge in the middle of it, and that is a good thing to have a week in rather than an afternoon.
You are there for the part the day visitors miss. The village quietens right down in the evening, and what is left is the noise of the Llugwy going over the rocks under Pont-y-Pair.
