Oak-framed cabins at Velindre, near Talgarth

Wye Glamping is at The Old Estate Yard at Velindre, between Talgarth and the River Wye, with the Black Mountains rising behind it. The cabins are oak-framed and each one is done out differently. The site is off-grid, running on solar, which is the thing to know before you book. Guests on Booking.com score it 9.8 out of 10 and give the location full marks.

Inside the cabins

All of them are vaulted, with the oak frame left showing and the panels between the timbers papered or painted. One has teal walls and a dark botanical print between the beams, a yellow bed under a patchwork kantha quilt and a striped rag rug on a pine floor. Another has a cream paper printed with small flowers on the roof slopes, a deep blue velvet throw over the bed and a sheepskin on the chair by the window. Fairy lights run along the beams in all of them.

The wood burner

Each cabin has a small black wood burner with a glass door standing on a bright blue tiled hearth, and a round wicker basket of split logs beside it. That is what makes these work outside the summer — you are not relying on a fan heater in October. There is a half-glazed stable door, a shelf of plants and books, and a black metal day bed made up with cushions along one wall.

The bathroom and outside

The bathroom has a pale blue wall hung with paper bunting and a white pedestal basin with a mirror over it. There is a shower — the owner calls Holly’s a hot-water shower and Bramble’s a luxury shower. Outside, each cabin has its own red-painted picnic table under the trees, and the yard has enough space between the cabins that you are not sitting in anybody’s lap. Because every cabin is fitted out differently — different papers, different beds, different colours — it is worth looking at the pictures and asking for the one you liked when you book.

Pwll y Wrach

Just outside Talgarth is Pwll y Wrach, which means the witch’s pool. It is a deep wooded valley on the River Ennig run as a nature reserve by the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales, with three waterfalls in it, the biggest dropping into the pool the place is named after. A gravelled path from the main car park is graded gently enough for a wheelchair or a pushchair, and gets you into the heart of it. The last stretch to the main fall is rougher and often muddy. It is one of the few sites round here with dormice in it, and there are otters on the river.

Getting here

Velindre is off the A479. Talgarth is two and a half miles for the shops and the bakery, Brecon twelve miles west. There is no station nearby, so come by car.

How many do the cabins sleep? Two adults. Holly also has a day bed; Bramble does not.

Is there a wood burner? Yes, in every cabin, with logs.

Is there a bath? Yes, with a shower over it.

Are dogs allowed? The owner’s own listings say no pets, so ask when you book.

Is it good for families? It takes two adults and two infants, so it does not suit a family with older children.

Is there somewhere to eat outside? Yes, each cabin has its own picnic table.
