The Racecourse Ground is a few minutes away and is the oldest international football stadium still in use anywhere in the world — Wales played their first home international on it in 1877. St Giles’ church in the centre has a tower of 136 feet, begun in 1506 and counted among the seven wonders of Wales. Erddig, a National Trust house on the southern edge of the city, is famous for the portraits and verses the Yorke family commissioned of their own servants from 1791 onwards, which is unique in Britain. Chirk Castle and the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct are both about twenty minutes south.
