The Wild Pheasant Hotel & Spa sits on Berwyn Road at the edge of Llangollen, a nineteenth-century building in its own gardens with the Dee Valley in front of it and Castell Dinas Brân on the skyline. There are 47 bedrooms, a spa, two places to eat and free parking, and the town centre is a few minutes down the road.

A hotel and spa on the edge of Llangollen

The original building dates from the nineteenth century and the hotel has grown around it, so the frontage is old and most of the bedrooms are not. It stands back from the road in tended lawns and gardens, far enough out to be quiet and close enough to walk in for dinner. It trades as part of the Best Western Signature Collection.

Rooms

There are 47 bedrooms in all, from standard singles, twins and doubles up to executive king rooms and suites. Accessible rooms are available, including a king room with disability access, and the hotel has wheelchair-accessible features throughout. The minimum check-in age is 18.

The spa

The Llangollen Spa has a sauna, a steam room and a wellness pool fitted with therapeutic jets. There is no swimming pool, so if you are looking for lengths this is not the place. It opens at 10am with last admission at 8pm and closes at 9pm, and it is for adults of 16 and over only. Non-residents can use it too, at £15 an hour, booked online in advance.

Eating and drinking

Two places to eat, both in the hotel: the Brasserie Restaurant and the Glasshouse. Afternoon tea is served, there is a bar and room service, and the cooked breakfast comes in for consistent praise from guests. Between them they cover vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and halal.

Dogs

Dogs are welcome in the Standard Double and Twin rooms only — not in the executive king rooms or the suites. Tell the hotel when you book so the right room can be set aside for you.

Llangollen and the Dee Valley

Llangollen sits on the River Dee inside the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley National Landscape. The steam railway runs west up the valley from the town, the canal runs east on the flat, and four miles along it Telford carried the whole thing across the valley on the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, a World Heritage Site a hundred and twenty-six feet above the river. Castell Dinas Brân stands on its cone above the north side of the town and the walk up is the first thing most people do. Valle Crucis Abbey and the Horseshoe Pass are both a short drive north. For more places to stay nearby, see our guide to Llangollen accommodation.

It suits a couple of nights rather than a stopover: somewhere to leave the car, walk into town, come back and sit in the spa, and eat without going out again. Walkers, spa guests and wedding parties all use it, and the gardens are the reason it takes so many weddings.
