All on the ground floor, it has three bedrooms — a double, a single and an adult bunk room — and a bathroom with bath, shower, basin and WC, sleeping five. The sitting room has a handsome stone inglenook with an electric woodburner-effect stove, and there are lovely countryside views from the windows. Outside, enclosed lawned gardens wrap around three sides of the cottage, with a patio and furniture for alfresco dining, and there is ample off-road parking. Things to do nearby

Anelog sits among the lanes and small fields between Aberdaron and the very tip of the peninsula, which makes it superb walking territory. The headland of Mynydd Mawr is close at hand, with its old coastguard lookout and breathtaking views across the sound to Bardsey Island, while the National Trust’s Whistling Sands at Porthor — where the fine sand squeaks underfoot — is just over two miles away. The Wales Coast Path threads along the whole shoreline, and the village of Aberdaron, with its beach, shop, cafés and St Hywyn’s church, is a short drive or a good walk down the hill. This is the quiet, elemental Llŷn that inspired the poet R. S. Thomas — big skies, empty beaches and the sound of the sea.

Who it suits

With ground-floor living and a genuinely away-from-it-all setting, Ty Hen suits families and walkers who want peace, character and the headlands and coast path close by. It is a quieter choice than the in-village cottages, ideal for those who like a couple of miles between themselves and the bustle. As it does not accept pets, it best suits guests holidaying without a dog.
