Tŷ Helyg is a Georgian townhouse on Watton in Brecon with nine en-suite bedrooms. There is a guest lounge with a wood-burning stove and an honesty bar stocked with local beers. The theatre, the canal basin and the town centre are all a couple of minutes’ walk, and open country starts within ten.

A Georgian townhouse in the middle of Brecon

Brecon is the market town at the northern edge of Bannau Brycheiniog, and Watton runs east from the centre of it. Visit Wales grade the house four star. It is small and family run, so the lounge and the honesty bar do the work a hotel bar would.

Rooms

Nine bedrooms, all en suite, each with a flat-screen television, tea and coffee and free toiletries. Free Wi-Fi and free parking, which in a town centre is worth having.

The lounge

A wood-burning stove for a cold evening and an honesty bar stocked with beers brewed locally — you pour your own and write it down.

Breakfast

Cereals, yoghurt and fruit salad first, then a full Welsh breakfast cooked to order.

Brecon and the national park

Brecon Cathedral is a few minutes up the hill and free to walk into. The canal basin at the end of Watton is the head of the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, and the towpath from it is flat for miles. Pen y Fan, the highest ground in southern Britain, is fifteen minutes south on the A470, with the car parks at Storey Arms and Pont ar Daf. Brecon also hosts a jazz festival every August that fills the whole town.
