A luxurious four-bedroom barn conversion for eight near Wrexham, with a private hot tub

The Wing is a beautifully finished barn conversion set in open countryside on the eastern side of Wrexham, close to the border villages of the Maelor and the meandering River Dee. Behind its mellow red-brick exterior lies a spacious, high-specification holiday home where original oak beams and A-frames meet contemporary comforts — a big farmhouse kitchen, generous en-suite bedrooms and, out in the enclosed garden, a private hot tub. It is a genuinely relaxing retreat for a larger family or a group of friends, with room to spread out and quiet fields all around.

Sleeping up to eight across four double bedrooms, and welcoming up to three well-behaved dogs, it is ideal for two or three couples travelling together, a family gathering or a special-occasion getaway.

Inside the barn

The heart of The Wing is a striking open-plan living space beneath vaulted, beamed ceilings. The kitchen is superbly equipped for a group, with a double electric oven, gas hob, microwave, two fridge-freezers and even a wine fridge, all arranged around a granite-topped island, with a dining area alongside. The adjoining sitting area has deep leather sofas, a Smart TV and an electric fire — a comfortable place to gather in the evening.

All four bedrooms are doubles, each with its own TV, and two come with en-suite shower rooms; the others are served by a family bathroom with twin basins and a bath, plus a separate cloakroom. Several rooms feature characterful touches such as a four-poster or a French sleigh bed, framed by the barn’s exposed oak trusses. Bed linen, towels, WiFi and heating are all included.

Exploring the Maelor and the Dee

This quiet, low-lying corner east of Wrexham is prime countryside for unwinding. Footpaths and lanes wander through farmland towards the River Dee, and within a short drive you can visit the pretty village of Holt with its riverside castle ruins and medieval bridge, or watch the horses at Bangor-on-Dee, one of Britain’s most scenic National Hunt racecourses. The market town of Overton, with its ancient yew trees ranked among the Seven Wonders of Wales, is close by.

Wrexham itself is a few miles west, offering shops, the Tŷ Pawb market and arts venue, and the football ground whose recent story has drawn visitors from far and wide; on the town’s southern edge lies Erddig, a much-loved National Trust hall and gardens. Just over the border, the historic city of Chester — with its Roman walls, the Rows and Chester Zoo — is within easy reach, as are the hills of the Clwydian Range and, a little further, the mountains of Eryri (Snowdonia). It is an easy base for combining Welsh countryside with Cheshire days out. You will find more ideas on our Wrexham accommodation pages.
