The Rooms

Bedrooms are modern and comfortably done in warm woods and burnt orange, with private bathrooms, air conditioning and flat-screen televisions. Many have a balcony — the whole point of the hotel is being able to sit out with the estuary in front of you — and others look over the garden. There are family rooms with twin beds alongside the doubles, and rooms with a connecting door for larger groups. Each has a tea and coffee tray, a wardrobe, a hairdryer, free toiletries, linen and towels. The bathrooms are new, tiled in grey, with big showers and heated towel rails. All the bedrooms are non-smoking, and there are step-free facilities for guests with disabilities.

Eating, Drinking and the Terrace

The restaurant is family-friendly and does British and Mediterranean cooking with a proper emphasis on seafood, which is what you would hope for in a building this close to the water — served for lunch and dinner, with a barbecue grill as well when the weather allows. There is a bar, and a glazed sun room and decked terrace looking straight out over the estuary, which is where most people end up. Breakfast is rated “fabulous” by guests. Outside, beyond the picnic benches, there is an outdoor play area for children, and parking is free and on site.

Poppit Sands and the Estuary

Poppit Sands is the big one — a wide crescent of sand at the mouth of the Teifi, backed by dunes, lifeguarded in season, and the official starting point of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, which sets off from here and runs 186 miles round to Amroth. The estuary itself is a serious wildlife place: bottlenose dolphins come into the river mouth in summer, seals haul out along the coast, and the reedbeds upriver at the Welsh Wildlife Centre are full of otters and birds. You can put a canoe in from the shore, and the coast path north from Poppit over Cemaes Head is one of the finest stretches in Wales.

Cardigan and St Dogmaels

St Dogmaels is a couple of minutes up the road, with the ruins of its twelfth-century abbey and a good weekly market in the mill. Cardigan itself — Aberteifi — is about four kilometres away, a proper old Welsh market town with its restored castle, the birthplace of the modern Eisteddfod, and a working high street. Cilgerran Castle sits on its gorge above the Teifi nine kilometres inland and is well worth the detour. There is enough here for a week, and most of it is within ten minutes of the hotel door.
