St Alban’s Church is a beautifully converted Victorian church at Treherbert, near Treorchy, in the heart of the Rhondda Valley. Built in 1899 and transformed into a stylish, characterful home, it sleeps up to ten across five bedrooms and welcomes up to three dogs free of charge — a wonderful, unusual base for a big family get-together or a group of friends exploring the South Wales valleys and the nearby Brecon Beacons. Its showpiece is a magnificent 25ft stained-glass window soaring above the open-plan living space beneath the original beamed roof.

Characterful, Light-Filled Living

The heart of the home is a breathtaking open-plan living room set under the church’s original vaulted, beamed ceiling, with comfortable sofas, a large TV, a sparkling chandelier and that spectacular stained-glass window flooding the room with colour. A galleried mezzanine looks down over the space, and original features — including the arched church door and pointed-arch windows — have been kept throughout. There is also a separate games room for rainy-day entertainment.

A Superb Kitchen and Dining Space

The large open-plan kitchen and dining area is built for a crowd, with a central island and breakfast bar, two electric ovens, an induction hob, a combination microwave oven, two fridge/freezers, a dishwasher, a washing machine and a tumble dryer. A long dining table comfortably seats everyone for a celebration meal, with French doors opening to the garden. Gas underfloor heating, electricity, bed linen, towels and Wi-Fi are all included, and a cot, highchair and stairgate are provided for little ones.

Five Bedrooms, Four Bathrooms

The five bedrooms sleep up to ten: four double rooms and a twin, two of the doubles with their own en-suites — one featuring a jacuzzi bath set beneath the eaves and exposed beams. There is also a family bathroom, and several of the bath and shower rooms make characterful use of the church’s original timber trusses and arched roofline.

Garden and Setting

Outside, there is a large, enclosed, lawned garden with a terrace and garden furniture — a lovely spot for a barbecue or a drink in the evening. There is on-road parking, and the property is no-smoking throughout. Please note the garden has six steps and some drops, so families with young children should take care, and sorry, no hen or stag parties.

There are several waterfalls within a fifteen-minute walk, while the dramatic scenery of the Brecon Beacons (Bannau Brycheiniog) and the Black Mountains offers superb walking. A shop is just 50 yards away, a pub 250 yards, and there is a train station within a mile.

There is plenty more to discover. Margam Country Park, with its castle, deer and Go Ape treetop adventure, makes a great family day out, as do the Dan-yr-Ogof National Showcaves. The stunning Gower Peninsula — Britain’s first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with its sandy beaches and coastal walks — is within reach, and the cities of Swansea and Cardiff are both around a 45-minute drive.
