The Royal Sportsman is the only hotel in Porthmadog, on the corner where the High Street meets the road to Tremadog. There are 25 rooms, and the restaurant holds two AA Rosettes — a level of cooking you would not expect from the outside.

Porthmadog
Two narrow-gauge railways start here. The Ffestiniog climbs to Blaenau Ffestiniog through the slate country on a line built in 1836 to bring slate down to the harbour; the Welsh Highland runs the other way to Caernarfon under Yr Wyddfa, and at 25 miles it is the longest heritage railway in Britain. The Cob, the mile-long embankment William Madocks threw across the estuary in 1811, carries the road and the railway and is the reason the town exists. Portmeirion is ten minutes east and Black Rock Sands five minutes west.
