Red Kite Touring Park

An adults-only touring park in the middle of Wales

Red Kite Touring Park is a five-star touring park just outside Llanidloes, and it takes adults only. That is the point of it. No children anywhere on the park, and the reviews come back to the quiet again and again. It is open all year round, not just for the season, and it sits in a bowl of hills a couple of miles from the town.

The pitches

Every pitch is fully serviced. That means a 16-amp electric hook-up with seven kilowatt-hours included each night, fresh drinking water on the pitch, and grey waste drainage on the pitch as well. You are not carrying containers about. There are three grades: premium fully serviced, standard fully serviced, and one slimline pitch, number 66, which is the cheapest. The hardstandings are wide and level, with room for an awning and a car alongside, and they curve round the contour of the hillside.

Fishing and dogs

There is coarse fishing here, on the park’s own lake. A permit is £5 for half a day, £7 for a full day or £35 for a week. There are nature ponds and dog walks too, and dogs are £1.50 each per night. The WiFi is good enough to stream. Farmland runs right up to the boundary on every side, and forestry tracks and streams start within walking distance of the gate. Lodges stand along the top of the park on the higher ground, above the touring field, looking out over open country towards the hills.

Bryntail Lead Mine

Four miles north-west of the park, at the foot of the Clywedog dam, stand the ruins of Bryntail Lead Mine. It is in Cadw’s care, it is free, and you can walk round the crushing houses, the ore bins, the roasting ovens, the smithy and the mine manager’s office. Lead was first taken here in 1708, and the works closed in 1884. What is hard to picture standing there now is how busy it was: for the ten years between 1870 and 1880 the Llanidloes area produced more lead ore than the rest of the world put together. The ore went down to the town and on down the Severn.

Getting here

Llanidloes is two miles away, with the shops, a bank and a chemist in it. The park is signed off the road out of town. Caersws is the nearest station, about seven miles off, with Cambrian Line trains through it. Book direct with the park using the button on this page.
