Pen Hill is a generously sized detached house given over to holidays, sleeping six across three bedrooms and two bathrooms on the southern fringe of Llantwit Major. The cottage

Living space is the strong suit here. The Heritage Coast on your doorstep

What sets this corner of the Vale apart is the sea. Colhugh beach below the town gives way to a switchback clifftop path that leads west to the paired lighthouses at Nash Point and east toward the wide sands at Southerndown and Ogmore. Tresilian Bay, with its low-tide cave and honeycombed rocks, is a favourite for rock-pooling when the water pulls back. Turn inland and the town keeps you fed and watered, Cowbridge offers smarter shopping a short run north, the National Trust gardens at Dyffryn make a fine wet-weather afternoon, and both Cardiff and its airport are inside half an hour by car.

Made for groups and families

Families tend to make the most of the space and the garden, spilling out for barbecues once everyone is back from the beach, while walkers treat the house as a launch pad for the long clifftop stretches on either side of the town and the quieter coves beyond them. There is room enough that two couples can holiday together without living in each other’s pockets, and the twin living rooms mean the football and a good book can happen under one roof at the same time. Cyclists have the flat, quiet lanes of the Vale to explore, birdwatchers the estuary and the cliffs, and everyone the reassurance that supermarkets, the town’s pubs and a railway station are all only a few minutes away when the holiday needs restocking, with a doctor and pharmacy in the town too should anyone need them.
