A contemporary single-storey cottage for ten near Kidwelly, on the Carmarthenshire coast

The Old Carriage Court is a spacious, thoughtfully converted cottage on the outskirts of the historic little town of Kidwelly, a few miles up the coast from Llanelli. Cleverly arranged all on one level, it combines the character of a traditional courtyard range — thick walls, high beamed ceilings, a woodburning stove — with bright, contemporary interiors and a genuinely generous layout. With five bedrooms, an enclosed courtyard garden and its own barn games room, it is a superb base for a large family or a group of friends, and the single-storey design makes it especially welcoming for anyone who would rather avoid stairs.

Sleeping up to ten guests across five bedrooms, several of them en-suite, it is ideal for a multi-generational holiday or a get-together where comfort and space matter.

Inside the cottage

At the heart of the cottage is a lovely open-plan living space with a soaring beamed ceiling, bringing together a well-equipped kitchen in smart navy units, a long dining table that seats the whole party, and a comfortable sitting area gathered around a woodburning stove. Everything is on the ground floor, which makes it easy to move around and keeps the whole group together.

The five bedrooms are generously proportioned: two super-king-size rooms (one en-suite), a king-size with an en-suite wet room, and two twins, served by a family bathroom and a further shower room. Beyond the cottage, a separate barn houses a games room with an indoor court — a brilliant spot for the children (and the grown-ups) whatever the weather. Bed linen, towels, WiFi and heating are all included.

Castles, beaches and the coast

Kidwelly is one of Carmarthenshire’s most appealing small towns, crowned by a superbly preserved Norman castle and set beside the tidal Gwendraeth estuary, with the Wales Coast Path passing close by. Just down the coast lies Pembrey, where Cefn Sidan stretches for eight miles of golden Blue Flag sand, backed by the forests, trails and activities of Pembrey Country Park. Llanelli, with its Millennium Coastal Park, wetland centre and Machynys golf, is a short drive away.

There is plenty more to fill a week: the market town of Carmarthen, the National Botanic Garden of Wales, and the beaches and cliffs of the Gower Peninsula — Britain’s first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty — all within easy reach, with Pembrokeshire and the Brecon Beacons a little further afield. It is a relaxed, uncrowded stretch of coast that rewards exploring. You will find more ideas on our Carmarthenshire accommodation pages.

Good to know

Because the whole cottage is on one level, with wide interior spaces, The Old Carriage Court is a good choice for groups that include anyone with limited mobility, though it is worth noting that facilities are “partially adapted” rather than fully accessible. The enclosed courtyard gives a safe, private space to relax, and the barn games room is a real bonus on a rainy afternoon. With everything included and ample parking, it is an easy base for a big group.
