Kidwelly is one of Carmarthenshire’s most appealing small towns, crowned by a superbly preserved Norman castle and set beside the tidal Gwendraeth estuary, with the Wales Coast Path passing close by. Just down the coast lies Pembrey, where Cefn Sidan stretches for eight miles of golden Blue Flag sand, backed by the forests, trails and activities of Pembrey Country Park. Llanelli, with its Millennium Coastal Park, wetland centre and Machynys golf, is a short drive away.

There is plenty more to fill a week: the market town of Carmarthen, the National Botanic Garden of Wales, and the beaches and cliffs of the Gower Peninsula — Britain’s first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty — all within easy reach, with Pembrokeshire and the Brecon Beacons a little further afield.
