Aberporth and the Cardigan Bay coast

Aberporth is a friendly Ceredigion village built around two sheltered, sandy beaches that shelve gently into the sea — ideal for children, paddling and rock-pooling. The village has a scattering of pubs, cafés and shops, and the Ceredigion Coast Path runs right along the clifftops, giving wonderful walks in both directions with the bay laid out below.

Above all, this is dolphin country. Cardigan Bay is home to one of the largest resident populations of bottlenose dolphins in Europe, and they are regularly seen from the shore and on boat trips along the coast, along with porpoises, grey seals and plenty of seabirds. It is one of the very best stretches of the Welsh coast for marine wildlife.

Beaches, villages and days out

Some of Ceredigion’s loveliest beaches lie within a short drive. Tresaith has a waterfall tumbling onto the sand; the National Trust’s Penbryn is a long, unspoilt sweep backed by woodland; and Mwnt, also National Trust, is a gem of a cove with a tiny medieval church and some of the finest dolphin-watching on the coast. The pretty villages of Llangrannog and New Quay — the latter with strong Dylan Thomas connections — are close by, while the Georgian harbour town of Aberaeron and the historic market town of Cardigan, gateway to the Teifi valley, both make an easy day out. Whether you come for the beaches, the wildlife or the coast path, Aberporth is a wonderful Cardigan Bay base.
