A farmhouse-style lodge on a working farm near Monmouth

Lower Lodge is a spacious four-bedroom holiday cottage set on a 270-acre working farm in the beautiful Wye Valley, close to the market town of Monmouth. Sleeping eight and surrounded by farmland and woodland, it is a wonderful choice for two families or a group of friends who want space, character and a genuine taste of the countryside — with farm animals, deer and red kites for company and some of the loveliest scenery in the Welsh borders all around.

Inside the lodge

The four bedrooms offer flexible sleeping, with two super-king beds that can be split into twins on request, a double and a king — so the layout suits couples and children alike. There are three bathrooms plus a separate downstairs WC, including an en-suite with a shower over the bath, one with a roll-top claw-foot tub and a separate shower room. Two woodburning stoves give the living space real warmth, and the kitchen is fully equipped with an electric oven and hob, microwave, fridge/freezer, dishwasher and a washer/dryer. There is a Smart TV and, by all accounts, excellent Wi-Fi throughout.

The setting

The lodge sits within a large enclosed garden with dining furniture and a charcoal barbecue, backing onto woodland, with bike storage for cyclists. Being on a working farm, there is plenty to enjoy: sheep, goats, pigs and chickens, plus wildlife including deer (even an albino deer that roams the estate), woodpeckers, owls and red kites overhead. It is a peaceful, rural escape with farmland views in every direction.

The Wye Valley and Monmouth

The Wye Valley is one of Britain’s most celebrated landscapes — a steep, wooded river valley straddling the border of Wales and England, designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The historic market town of Monmouth is the nearest hub, with Chepstow, Abergavenny and Crickhowell all close by. There is no shortage of days out: the romantic riverside ruins of Tintern Abbey, the mighty Raglan Castle, the trails of the Forest of Dean, and the mountains of the Brecon Beacons (Bannau Brycheiniog) and the Black Mountains. The valley is also superb for walking, canoeing and cycling. For more places to stay nearby, see our guide to accommodation in Monmouth.

Who it suits

With four bedrooms, three bathrooms and flexible zip-and-link beds, Lower Lodge is ideal for two families or a group of friends holidaying together — there is genuine space for everyone, indoors and out. The working-farm setting and the wildlife make it a memorable choice for children, while walkers, cyclists and anyone after a peaceful rural escape will love having the Wye Valley and the Brecon Beacons on the doorstep. It is a great base for a celebration or a get-together, too.
