A Modern Spa Hotel in the Conwy Valley, on the Edge of Snowdonia

This is not a creaky old coaching inn, and it is not trying to be. The IXORA is a big, modern, slate-and-glass hotel set down in the Conwy Valley at Dolgarrog, with the wooded flank of the mountain rising straight behind it and the whole of Eryri (Snowdonia) beyond that. What sets it apart is what has been built around it: a full spa and wellness centre with an indoor pool, an outdoor hydro pool and hot tub on a terrace looking at the hills, a fitness centre, a restaurant, a bar and a coffee shop. It is a proper Snowdonia spa hotel, and one of the few places in the valley where you can spend the whole day without going anywhere.

The Rooms

Bedrooms are contemporary and generously glazed — clean lines, warm woods, a big window or sliding door with the valley on the other side of it. Rooms are air-conditioned and come with a private bathroom, a work desk, a flat-screen television with telephone, a tea and coffee tray, an electric kettle and a fridge. Family rooms are available. The bathrooms are tiled and modern, with a bath or shower, free toiletries and a hairdryer. Several rooms have their own seating corner by the window, which is where you will end up sitting with a coffee looking at the trees.

The Spa, the Food and the Facilities

The spa and wellness centre is the reason most people book. There is an indoor pool with a water feature, an outdoor hydro pool and hot tub set on a decked terrace with loungers and a mountain view, and a fitness centre alongside. The hotel’s restaurant is family-friendly and serves brunch, lunch and dinner in a mix of traditional and modern surroundings, with a bar and a coffee shop as well. Breakfast is a substantial affair — continental and buffet options, a full English or Irish, plus vegan and gluten-free choices. There is also a sun terrace, a garden, a minimarket, a business area, electric-vehicle charging and free on-site parking. Dogs are allowed, and there are step-free facilities for disabled guests.

Adventure on the Doorstep

The hotel sits alongside Adventure Parc Snowdonia, whose inland surf lagoon — the first of its kind in the world — puts a rideable wave in the middle of a Welsh valley, with an indoor adventure centre and climbing alongside it. That combination of surf in the morning and spa in the afternoon is not something you can do anywhere else in Wales. Beyond it, the Carneddau mountains rise immediately to the west, and the walking from the valley floor is superb in every direction.

Conwy, Bodnant and the Coast

Bodnant Garden is about six miles up the road and is one of the great gardens of Britain, spectacular in late May and again in autumn. The walled town of Conwy, with its castle, its complete circuit of medieval walls and the fishing quay, is a fifteen-minute drive north, and Llandudno, the pier and the Great Orme lie a little beyond that on the coast. Southwards, Betws-y-Coed, the Swallow Falls and the heart of the national park are all within half an hour. It is a genuinely central base for Eryri, with the advantage of a hot tub to come back to.
