Above the Tywi estuary

Ferryside Farm keeps a small caravan and camping site at Ferryside, on the eastern shore of the Tywi estuary. Llansteffan and its castle sit directly opposite across the river, and the estuary fills and empties twice a day in front of you.

What it costs

Caravan and motorhome pitches are £30 a pitch and that includes the electric hook-up, which is unusual — most sites charge it on top. Tent pitches are £25 for two adults and two children, with extra adults at £5 a night. The farm asks you to book direct for the best rate.

The site

There are 30 seasonal pitches and five more kept for short stays by caravans and motorhomes. The camping field could take 40 tents but is deliberately held to around 20 or 25, so there is proper space between them rather than guy rope against guy rope.

Ferryside

Ferryside is a village on a railway line, which is rarer than it sounds on this coast — trains stop here on the way between Swansea and Carmarthen. Cockles have been gathered off these sands for generations. The ferry the village is named for once crossed to Llansteffan, and the castle above that village is free to walk up to and open all year.
