A characterful stone cottage for six in the heart of Kidwelly, near Llanelli
Castle School House is a handsome and characterful stone cottage right in the middle of the historic little town of Kidwelly, a few miles up the Carmarthenshire coast from Llanelli. Full of period charm — exposed stone walls, a range cooker, cast-iron fireplaces and a lovely freestanding bath — it has been comfortably furnished for a relaxed self-catering holiday, with a walkable town on the doorstep and the castle, coast and countryside all close at hand. It is an easy, welcoming base for a family or a group of friends wanting to explore this quieter corner of South Wales.
Sleeping up to six across three bedrooms, it suits a family or two couples looking for a homely town base with plenty of character and everything within a short stroll.
Inside the cottage
The cottage has a warm, traditional feel. There is a comfortable sitting room with leather sofas gathered around a fireplace, and a separate dining room with an exposed stone wall and French doors to the garden — a characterful spot for evening meals. The kitchen is a real centrepiece, fitted with cream units, a slate floor and an impressive range-style cooker, so there is plenty of room to cook for the whole party, with a separate external utility room for muddy boots and coats.
The three bedrooms — a king-size double, a further double and a single — are bright and homely, served by a ground-floor bathroom with both a freestanding roll-top bath and a separate walk-in shower. WiFi, central heating and a cot are provided, along with bed linen and towels.

Exploring Kidwelly and the coast
Kidwelly is one of Carmarthenshire’s most rewarding small towns, dominated by its magnificently preserved Norman castle — one of the best-kept in Wales — and set beside the tidal Gwendraeth estuary, with the Wales Coast Path passing close by. The town’s medieval gateway, its little industrial museum and a scattering of pubs and shops are all within a short walk of the cottage.
Beyond the town, the coast opens up: just down the road at Pembrey, Cefn Sidan offers eight miles of golden Blue Flag sand, backed by the forests and activities of Pembrey Country Park, while Llanelli’s Millennium Coastal Park, wetland centre and Machynys golf are a short drive away. Further afield lie the market town of Carmarthen, the National Botanic Garden of Wales, and the beaches and cliffs of the Gower Peninsula — Britain’s first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is a genuinely relaxing, uncrowded stretch of Wales. You will find more ideas on our Carmarthenshire accommodation pages.
Good to know
The cottage’s town-centre position means you can leave the car and walk to the castle, the shops and the coast path, which many guests love. The bathroom is on the ground floor, with the bedrooms upstairs. An enclosed rear courtyard gives a private spot to relax after a day out, and with linen, towels and heating all included there is little to organise.
