Cartref (Welsh for “home”) is a characterful stone cottage set in a row of period houses right in the centre of Llangollen, with the River Dee, the steam railway and the town’s shops and pubs all just a short stroll away. Recently modernised throughout and sleeping four, it’s a comfortable, genuinely central base for exploring the Dee Valley and the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Inside the cottage

There are two bedrooms — a king-size room on the ground floor and a twin upstairs — plus a family bathroom. The open-plan living and dining area is bright and welcoming with a flat-screen TV, and the modern, fully-equipped kitchen has a dishwasher and washing machine. Several windows look out towards the park and river, with the hilltop ruins of Castell Dinas Brân on the skyline. A cot and highchair are available, free Wi-Fi is provided, and there’s off-road parking for one car. One well-behaved dog is welcome, so the whole family can come along.

Cartref’s location is its trump card: you can leave the car parked all weekend. Here’s how the locals make the most of it:

• The best free view — climb to Castell Dinas Brân, the 13th-century castle ruin on the hill above town. It’s a steep 30–40 minute walk straight up from the cottage, and the Dee Valley panorama at the top (especially at sunset) is the photo everyone takes home.
• A flat riverside walk — follow the canal towpath from Llangollen Wharf up to the Horseshoe Falls, Thomas Telford’s elegant curved weir on the Dee (about 1.5 miles each way, mostly level — ideal with the dog).
• The big day out — the UNESCO-listed Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is a few miles east; walk (or take a narrowboat) across Telford’s “stream in the sky”, 38 metres above the river. Not one for vertigo sufferers.
• Slow travel — ride the Llangollen Heritage Railway steam train up the valley to Corwen, or take a traditional horse-drawn boat along the canal from the wharf.
• Where to eat — the Corn Mill has a deck right over the rushing Dee; otherwise Castle Street is lined with independent cafés and pubs, all a couple of minutes from the door.
• When to come — spring and autumn are quiet and beautiful; the International Musical Eisteddfod (early July) is a wonderful spectacle but the town gets busy, so book well ahead for those dates.
