A back-to-nature campsite in the peaceful Lledr Valley
Camp Snowdonia, part of the Tan Aeldroch hill farm, is a wonderfully simple, get-away-from-it-all campsite in the tranquil Lledr Valley — one of the loveliest and quietest corners of Snowdonia (Eryri). Set across two flat, sheltered fields bordered by the River Lledr, it is a proper back-to-nature spot for tents, campervans and touring caravans, where the emphasis is on peace, fresh air and the great outdoors rather than entertainment and crowds. If you want to fall asleep to the sound of the river and wake up surrounded by mountains, this is the place.
The site and what’s on offer
The main campsite has grassy pitches with toilets and showers, water standpipes and the welcome bonus of campfires — fire rings are provided, and natural firewood is available on site at £5 a bag (the surrounding woodland mustn’t be foraged). For a bit more seclusion there is a separate “bubble field” of just ten pitches with sole use of the field and its own campfire pit, and a quieter long-stay area where tents can be left up for extended visits. There is even a car-free eco area for those who want to pitch away from vehicles altogether. Pricing is refreshingly straightforward and great value, charged per person and per vehicle, and dogs are welcome provided they are kept on a lead at all times. The latest admission is 9pm, and as a deliberately peaceful site there are no radios, stereos or large groups.
The Lledr Valley setting
The valley is the real star here. The two riverside fields sit right beside the Lledr, and the site is the closest campsite to the well-loved Fisherman’s Path, which follows the river through beautiful woodland and is perfect for a gentle morning stroll. You are close to the pretty village of Dolwyddelan, with its atmospheric medieval castle, tucked between Betws-y-Coed and Blaenau Ffestiniog. It is a marvellous setting for walkers, anglers and anyone who simply wants to unplug for a few days.
Exploring Snowdonia
For all its peace, the campsite is brilliantly placed for the highlights of Snowdonia. The village of Betws-y-Coed, with its shops, cafés and the famous Swallow Falls, is a short drive away, while the slate-mining heritage and Zip World attractions of Blaenau Ffestiniog lie in the other direction. Snowdon itself, the Gwydir Forest trails and the mountain railways of the national park are all within easy reach.
