Criccieth is a small town on the south coast of the Llŷn with a castle on a rock between its two beaches. The Caerwylan sits on the front, four-star and family owned rather than part of a group. The edge of Eryri is ten minutes’ drive inland.

The Tonnau restaurant serves dinner from a menu that changes regularly and cooks from local produce — tonnau is Welsh for waves. There is a lounge and a well-stocked bar with a range of spirits, wines and beers brewed locally. A full Welsh breakfast is included in the rate.

Criccieth and around
The castle is the thing to do first — Welsh-built by Llywelyn the Great, taken and rebuilt by Edward I, then burnt by Owain Glyndŵr in 1404, and the scorch marks are still on the stone. Cadwalader’s ice cream shop on the front has been there since 1927. Porthmadog and its two narrow-gauge railways are ten minutes east, Portmeirion fifteen, and Pwllheli and the Llŷn run west.
