Inside the cottage

The ground floor is built around a large, light-filled open-plan living space. At one end, deep sofas cluster around a brick inglenook fireplace with a woodburning stove; at the other, a sleek kitchen in soft grey runs along two walls, well equipped with an oven and hob, dishwasher, microwave and fridge-freezer. A breakfast bar with stools and a solid wooden dining table give plenty of room to cook, eat and gather together, while bi-fold doors open the whole space onto the patio and garden on warmer days.

Upstairs are three comfortable double bedrooms, freshly decorated and made up with quality linen and fluffy towels. WiFi, central heating and a cot are provided, and there is a washing machine for longer stays. The real showpiece, though, is outside.

The garden is the heart of a stay here. A generous stone-flagged patio holds the hot tub and sun loungers, framed by a wide lawn and a genuinely lovely view of the surrounding hills — an easy place to unwind with a glass of something after a day on the hills, or to let the children run while dinner cooks.

When you do venture out, there is plenty within a short drive. Chirk Castle, a 700-year-old Marcher fortress in the care of the National Trust, sits just above the village with its celebrated gardens and long views into Wales and Shropshire. The Ceiriog Valley — once described as “a little piece of heaven on earth” — winds westward through Glyn Ceiriog into quiet walking country, while the Llangollen Canal, the mighty Chirk and Pontcysyllte aqueducts, and the steam trains and horse-drawn boats of Llangollen are all close by. Wrexham town, with its shops, market and much-talked-about football club, is around ten miles north, and the walking trails of the Berwyn and Dee Valley beckon in every direction.
