Aberdaron is as far west as Wales goes: a National Trust-protected huddle of lime-washed fishermen’s cottages around a golden beach, with the ancient church of St Hywyn standing right on the shore. From Benlli you can stroll to the beach, the village shop, the cafés and the pub in a few minutes. For centuries this was the last stop for pilgrims sailing to holy Bardsey Island (Ynys Enlli), and seasonal boat trips still run from nearby Porth Meudwy to see the island’s seals, seabirds and lighthouse.
