The world-famous book town of Hay-on-Wye, about five miles away, is renowned for its bookshops and its literary festival, with traditional markets, art galleries, antique and independent shops and some excellent gastropubs, restaurants and cafes. In the other direction, the market town of Brecon has its cathedral, a lively market and the start of the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal.

There is plenty more to discover. The Brecon Beacons (Bannau Brycheiniog) offer some of the best walking in Britain, from gentle riverside strolls to the high ridges of the Black Mountains, and the area’s dark skies make it superb for stargazing. The towns of Talgarth and Crickhowell, and the wider Wye Valley, are all within easy reach for a day out.
