Number 2 Aqueduct Cottages is one of a handsome red-brick terrace set right on the towpath of the Llangollen Canal, just a hundred yards or so from the magnificent Chirk Aqueduct on the southern edge of Wrexham county. It is a wonderfully peaceful spot: narrowboats drift past the garden gate, woodland rises behind, and the wider Ceiriog and Dee valleys open up all around. For anyone who loves canals, castles and country walks, few bases put you closer to the action while still feeling tucked away.

The cottage sleeps up to five across three bedrooms and welcomes two well-behaved dogs, making it a natural choice for a family, a group of friends, or a couple bringing the dog along for a walking holiday.

Inside the cottage

Downstairs has a proper cottage feel, with a comfortable sitting room built around a characterful cast-iron fireplace, and a separate dining room where the whole party can gather around the table. The kitchen is well equipped for self-catering, with an oven and hob, dishwasher, microwave and fridge-freezer, plus a utility area with a washing machine and tumble dryer — handy after a muddy towpath ramble. One set of French doors frames a lovely view straight out over the canal.

The three bedrooms are made up as a double, a twin and a single, with two bathrooms serving the cottage, so there is no morning queue for a group of five. Bed linen and towels are provided, and WiFi, central heating, a cot and a highchair are all available, so families travelling with little ones have what they need.

On the canal and around Chirk

The setting is the star here. Chirk Aqueduct carries the Llangollen Canal high across the Ceiriog valley on ten tall stone arches, running side by side with Telford’s railway viaduct — you can walk straight from the cottage onto the towpath and across it. A little further along the canal, the even more famous Pontcysyllte Aqueduct forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and boat trips run across it from nearby Trevor and Llangollen.

Chirk village itself is a few minutes away, and towering above it is Chirk Castle, a 700-year-old Marcher fortress cared for by the National Trust, with award-winning gardens and sweeping views. The quiet lanes of the Ceiriog Valley lead deeper into the hills towards Glyn Ceiriog, while Llangollen — with its steam railway, riverside setting and horse-drawn canal boats — is a short drive north. Wrexham town, with its shops, market and football ground, is around eight miles away, and the walking country of the Berwyn mountains and the Dee Valley is all within easy reach. Good to know

The cottage sits directly on the towpath, so it is worth keeping an eye on younger children and dogs near the water, but the enclosed rear garden gives a safe, private space to relax with a coffee or a barbecue after a day out. Please note that bookings begin on either a Monday or a Friday. With parking on site and everything included, it is an easy, unhurried base for exploring this beautiful corner of the Welsh borders.
