The Abbey Grange stands in eight acres of its own ground at the foot of the Horseshoe Pass, a mile and a half outside Llangollen. There are eight bedrooms, some with four-poster beds, and the Oak Bar keeps real ales. Valle Crucis Abbey — which gives the place its name — is a few minutes down the lane.
Under the Horseshoe Pass
The house was built of local slatestone for the man who owned the slate quarry, and it looks out over open fields and hills on every side. The Horseshoe Pass climbs from just above it onto the moor, one of the great drives in Wales. Llangollen is a mile and a half down the valley.

Llangollen and the Dee Valley
Valle Crucis Abbey is minutes away, a Cistercian house founded in 1201 and one of the best-preserved abbey ruins in Wales. The Pillar of Eliseg, a ninth-century cross shaft, stands in the field beyond it. Castell Dinas Brân sits on its cone above Llangollen and the walk up is the first thing most people do. Four miles east the canal crosses the valley on the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, a World Heritage Site 126 feet above the river.
