Rhos-on-Sea Accommodation

Where to Stay in Rhos-on-Sea

Rhos-on-Sea looks out across Colwyn Bay, with Llandudno and the Great Orme closing the view to the west. The front is flat the whole way along, which makes it a place for a slow walk and a long look at the sea. Behind it the streets climb into quiet avenues of trees. Holiday accommodation in Rhos-on-Sea suits a slow seaside week, with a flat promenade for walks.

More About Rhos-on-Sea

Walk the promenade, which is flat and traffic-free and carries the Wales Coast Path. The Rhos-on-Sea Heritage Trail runs through the village with plaques to read as you go. The bus along the coast road makes it easy to leave the car where it is.

The Cistercian monks of Aberconwy Abbey put a fishing weir on the shore here in the Middle Ages, a wall of stones that trapped fish as the tide went out. The place took its name from them: Rhos Fynach, the heath of the monks.

The weir caught a great deal. Thirty-five thousand herring came out of it in a single night in 1850, and ten tons of mackerel in one tide as late as 1907. Parliament banned fish weirs in 1861 unless the owners could prove theirs was older than Magna Carta, and the Parry Evans family, who held this one, proved it.

St Trillo’s Chapel stands right on the beach by the old fishing weir. It measures only eleven feet by eight, with room for six chairs, and is believed to be the smallest church in the British Isles. It is open every day.

The building beside the weir is a pub now, still called the Rhos Fynach, with a beer garden at the top of the beach and crazy golf next to it. You can walk to it along the front from either direction.

Rhos-on-Sea accommodation — your questions answered

Where is Rhos-on-Sea?
At the western end of Colwyn Bay, in Conwy county. Llandudno is a ten-minute drive west along the B5115, and Colwyn Bay itself is the next place east.
Is Rhos-on-Sea beach dog friendly?
Partly, and this is the one place on the coast where the usual rule does not hold. Two areas at Rhos-on-Sea are shut to dogs all year, not just over the summer. Read the sign where you come onto the beach.
How far is Rhos-on-Sea from Llandudno?
About a ten-minute drive on the coast road. On foot it is roughly four miles along the promenade and the Wales Coast Path. It is level along the promenade, but the path climbs around the Little Orme before Llandudno, so it is not flat the whole way. There is a bus if you would rather walk one direction only.
Is Rhos-on-Sea worth visiting?
It is quieter than Llandudno and Colwyn Bay, the front is flat and walkable, and both of those towns are close enough for an evening out.
Are there lifeguards at Rhos-on-Sea?
No. The county does not run an RNLI patrol on any of its beaches, so treat the sea here as unsupervised. The closest patrolled sand is Rhyl and Prestatyn, in season only.
How much does it cost to stay in Rhos-on-Sea?
Prices on this page start at £79 a night. Every card carries its own price, and where you see a green badge the owner takes your booking without a middleman.

Rhos-on-Sea is a good base for this end of the coast. Colwyn Bay is a mile and a half along the front, Llandudno ten minutes west, and Conwy and Bodnant Garden are both a short run from here.
