The mountains of Eryri (Snowdonia) come right down to the sea at the western end. The Conwy Valley runs south past Rowen and Trefriw, with Bodnant Garden partway up it, and Betws-y-Coed sits at the head of the valley half an hour from the beach.
Llandudno has a shore on each side of it, so there is always one out of the wind. A cable-hauled tramway climbs the streets to the top of the Great Orme, the limestone headland above the town, and it runs from late March to the end of October.
The holiday houses on this coast went up for the Victorians, terrace after terrace of tall bay-windowed rooms built to take paying guests. The grandest stand along the seafront parades at Llandudno, Colwyn Bay and Rhos-on-Sea, three and four storeys high and facing straight out to sea.
Those tall houses are why so much of the self-catering here is a flat rather than a whole house. A seafront flat at Llandudno or Rhos-on-Sea is often one storey of a building that has taken visitors for 150 years, with its own kitchen and front door.
Those parades still stand along Llandudno’s two shores and at Colwyn Bay and Rhos-on-Sea. Inside Conwy’s walls the buildings are older and smaller, and the walls themselves are open to walk. West along the coast, Penmaenmawr and Llanfairfechan sit under the Carneddau.
Deganwy looks straight across the estuary at Conwy castle, with a marina below it where the boats come and go on the tide. To drive into Conwy you go round by Llandudno Junction and over the bridge, about ten minutes.
You need not use the car every day. The coast railway runs from Prestatyn through Rhyl, Colwyn Bay, Llandudno Junction and Penmaenmawr to Bangor. Rhos-on-Sea is a mile from Colwyn Bay station, and Caernarfon is served by buses from Bangor.
Inland the ground is gentler. Behind Rhyl and Prestatyn the Vale of Clwyd runs south towards Denbigh, a market town with a ruined castle on the hill above it. Half an hour up the Conwy valley the road climbs into the mountains.
Self-catering suits this coast, with the beach at one end of most of these towns and the hills at the other. There are 53 listed along it, from Caernarfon and Bangor in the west to Prestatyn in the east, from £70 a night. Take the full week and the price per night usually drops.
