Go up on the walls first. Three quarters of a mile of them survive, with twenty-one towers along the way. They cost nothing to walk and give you the whole town laid out below. Come down for Plas Mawr on the High Street, the Elizabethan townhouse Robert Wynn built between 1576 and 1585, which opens from March to early November.

The valley behind the town runs south to the mountains, past Rowen and up to Betws-y-Coed. Llandudno is ten minutes the other way. Bodnant Garden is twenty up the valley, and the station is on the main coast line.

The thing most people never notice about Conwy is why the main road misses it. Rather than drive the A55 through a medieval town or over the estuary, the engineers ran it beneath the river. The Conwy Tunnel was the first immersed-tube tunnel built in Britain, and is still the longest road tunnel in Wales.

Instead of boring through rock, its six concrete sections were cast in a basin dug from the river bank. Each was floated out and sunk into a trench across the estuary. That basin is now Conwy Marina, and the Queen opened the tunnel on 25 October 1991.

The castle opens every day but Christmas and New Year, and down on the quay stands the Smallest House in Britain, barely two metres wide. Pleasure boats run from the quay in summer. Conwy mussels made the town’s name, though the beds in the estuary are closed to fishing until at least the end of August 2026.

The Honey Fair fills the High Street and Lancaster Square each September, a fair the town has run for close to seven hundred years. The rest of the year, Plas Mawr and the castle keep it busy.
